I was loaned a book today called "The great controversy" by E.G White.

I have done some reading of her biography and so I know of her Seventh day Adventists background but I also found a website which says she plagiarised her work as well as photo's. Is she somebody I should be wary of?

A number of years ago I read her book "The desire of ages" and at the time I agreed with what she wrote but have since come to the conclusion that my views on Jesus were too small and limiting in light of what scriptures had to say about Him.

I went through a SDA phase in my life about 40 years ago, so I have both of the Ellen G. White books you mentioned. I used them for reference though and never actually read either one of them straight through. I have hardly looked at them for the past 20 or so years. I was not aware, at the time, of any plagiarism charges against her, but I do think you should by wary of her SDA background. But, like I said, I haven't really gotten into the books for at least 20 years.

From what little I gathered EGW is kind of on the weird side of the SDA (all denominations having their more mainstream and more out-there sides).

Greatdivide46, what did you mean "I do think you should by wary of her SDA background"?

I read a mini-biography of her and didn't find anything to be wary of, I did notice however that she seemed to have regular "visions" and when she spoke of these to the church they seemed to take off in the direction of those visions. I'm not against a person having a revelation from the the Lord through a vision or a dream but her "visions" did seem to have a strong influence in what the church did. I know the scriptures tell us to "test the spirits to see if they are from God" and I would hope and pray that the church would indeed do this but just like in today's church, there are those who will follow after any doctrine if it sounds good.

I think I may read this book and examine what it says in the light of the scriptures.

From what little I know of the SDA Church my impression is that there was a time, perhaps years ago now, when EGW's writings were considered on a par with Scripture. However, my impression may be wrong.

Greatdivide46, what did you mean "I do think you should be wary of her SDA background"?

All I meant was that one should be aware of her SDA background when reading her writings. "Wary" was the wrong word to use to convey what I meant. Sorry 'bout that.

I was recently to an SDA Bible study. They explained that there are some individuals and groups within SDA who feel that only SDA are true believers in Christ, and others who feel that they are part of the larger body of Christ with a few denominational distinctives which are of secondary importance.

What I have read of Ellen G. White regarding the Gospel and salvation is very much in line with what I read in the Bible. She gets more on the emotional side than some other authors, but that is not in itself a bad thing. I like her explanation of hell, which is similar to Tim Keller's.

I also read "The Bible Story" by Arthur S. Maxwell when I was a child, and this was instrumental in my coming to Christ at age 11 our of a Roman Catholic background. I am very grateful for these authors.

I had more problems reading certain sections of Ten Commandments: Twice Removed and trying to reconcile it with Scripture, but at the Bible study I was told that the SDA have also historically had moments of decision regarding the law and grace, and they have come down on the side of grace when all was said and done. The Bible study group satisfied me that they have a defensible interpretation from Scripture for the parts I disagreed with. Even if we don't agree, I can see where they are coming from.

I don't like the way they try to take you through each topic to make your thoughts match their doctrinal spin; it seems like it's part brainwashing and not just a study of the Bible. Some people really love that approach, though. Knowledge is good, but it can puff up. Where there is love, love edifies.

Like another who posted here, I have never heard plagiarism charges against Ellen White, ... even if she did plagiarize certain things, I am not so concerned about the source as I am the content ... although if she was not acting in integrity it should be rectified.

I looked at the plagiarism website. Yes, the pictures are lifted from other sources - at least those two. The text against text comparison shows some paraphrasing, which is not an exact plagiarism; she re-works the text to make her own points, while leaning heavily on the other text for the historical facts. The other source should be in a bibliography at the very least, but I am not sure what the practices for that were at her time, especially is she wasn't writing it as an academic text.

I thought she was the founder of the SDA denomination?
