Anyone shopping for school supplies yet?

Have you seen things on the shelves yet?

What are the lists like this year for everyone?

I haven't been to Walmart in a long time so I don't know if stuff is out yet or not. Nothing at the grocery store yet tho.

I did go through the stash of stuff I have here at home and get an idea of what I have and what needs to be purchased. The lists are pretty similar to years past. The 4th grade list for Zoe is shorter and more reasonable than what it was when Ethan and Aryn were in 4th.

Here's the place to discuss all things school supply related!

Oh and if you hear of a great sale somewhere - Make it known to the rest of us!!

Blessings,

Garsy

2 years ago we went to Wal-Mart and spent nearly $200 for both kids. I couldn't believe how much money we spent. I wandered over to Target a week later and noticed that their school supplies were half the price of Wal-mart. I was so annoyed. Target is so much more convenient, too.

We should start thinking about it soon. With both kids in high school, we have to pay for registration and year books and band camp and .......

Maybe I'll suggest this to DH.

Our elementary is covering *most* of the school supplies this year, hallelujah! They can get quite pricey, even shopping the good sales. I'll have to get less than ten things between the two boys.

I don't know what my oldest's list is going to be like, she's going into *gulp* middle school this year. I went ahead and picked up some .19 pkgs of pencils at Walgreens last week, figure she'll need those at least.

We are embarking on a new venture this year...private school. The schools where we are moving have terrible terrible test scores (now I can't tell you where in case you live there!!!) and some serious discipline issues. This school doesn't have a supply list. But they have this fee....and that fee...and another fee.....Wow.

My teens are pretty particular when it comes to their supplies. Ds likes those file folder type of notebook as he's ver organized and I knwo I have to buy dd a TI something graphing calculator. We'll go get stuff in a few weeks. I have extra's in the basement, which I should go through because I know there's stuff down there that's not getting used. Maybe I can donate it?

I did just pay $ 160.00 per kid to register and $30.00 per year book. So much for free public school.

I wish our kids were particular. Instead they trash everything and lose everything and we end up buying 3 sets of school supplies for each kid just to get through one semester. They can't keep track of their stuff, so we have to buy more so they can do their school work. If they cared enough to stay organized, I'd be more than willing to buy an expensive pencil or two and some really nice notebooks and accordian files. But they just don't care.

I have to come up with 2 new systems for organization for my middle two. The eldest has figured out what works for him and usually keeps absolutely everything in binders in his backpack and RARELY uses a locker at school for anything including gym clothes.

My youngest still has a folder system in place - a daily take home folder does the trick.

But my middle two. I need to figure out what is going to work for them. They will each have to have some sort of organizer that expands to hold a lot of stuff as they have a number of classes, but also closes securely so things don't escape.

Any ideas?

I say hire them a butler Can you imagine the teachers' faces??

Teacher: Who is that? Why is he pulling up a chair next to your desk?!

Child: Oh, that's James. He's my butler. He'll be taking notes for me.

Butler: Quite right. Very good, sir.

Is it possible to make them pay for their own? That's what my parents would do. Buy one set, and if they don't take care of them, they have to replace them themselves. If they don't have the money, lend it to them, or make them work it off. It's a proven fact that if people have to buy something for themselves, they will take care better care of it.

It's certainly worth a shot. I'll bring it up to DH. Unfortunately, they're his kids, not mine, and they're mom will over rule a lot of what he and I decide. And they have no real source of income. But we did all agree that step-son gets to pay for his own summer school. Don't think it's making him think twice about doing his homework, but DH hasn't had to mow the lawns all summer. ;)

My wife is President of the PTO at our school...and they organize the ordering of "pre packaged" school supplies....

Everything the "list" for each grade requires...all the "right brands"...all packaged up....and in the classrooms on Day 1, for one very reasonable price....

Almost ALL parents order the pre-packaged supplies...though, not all. If you choose, you're certainly able to still go out and get it all yourself.

Depending on grade...the packs ran from around $45-$60ish (i think..don't quote me on that)...

there are a couple of companies that specialize in doing this....and she got quotes from a couple, and was able to negotiate great prices....

Our elementary does this too. I find, however, by shopping sales and keeping things like pencil boxes, scissors, rulers, calculators, binders, and whatnot, from year to year, I can usually get by for much cheaper than the kit would cost me. I have a lot left over from last year! And besides I'd still have to go shopping for my older ones anyway. I can usually get all my school supply shopping done for less $100. That does NOT include things like backpacks and shoes.

Blessings,

Garsy

That doesn't seem very cheap to me. Most of the things on my ds's list can be bought for 25 cents or less. The only things that can't are the tissues and paper towels.

The prepackaged are usually used as a fund raiser for the school that's why the cost more.

I was in Target the other day and saw the graphics up for school supplies. I hadn't even thought about them and this year I won't be buying much at all. My oldest is in college and the other two in high school. They don't have supply lists and I will buy several spiral notebooks they like to use, some mechanical pencils and a few other things to have around here. I am so glad I don't have lists anymore.

The elementary schools here have the pre-packaged supplies as well. When I saw the list when my kids were in elementary school I realized I could save so much money by purchasing my own supplies. I could buy everything and have a lot of extras for less money than they want for the pre-packaged items, and ours were not for a fund raiser.

Our PTO sells the prepacked supplies "at cost"...and simply does it as a "service" to the students and their families.

Sure...you may be able to "save" a little by shopping sales and going to several stores to get what you need for your list....but, as I mentioned, the prices are VERY VERY comparable...(at least with what our school's pricing is)

The families in our school gladly purchase the pre-packaged supplies....saves them so much time and hassle...to most, it's certainly worth the money they might "save"....

so many people we know from school are out of town...on vacation...and, aren't around to be shopping "Sales"....

I learned something about backpacks over the last few years. I always got the kids their backpacks at Wal Mart of Big Lots for as little as possible while still trying to let them have a choice. By February they were trashed looking. So when DD asked for one of those duffle bag kind of backpacks for middle school, I went on Land's End. I about swallowed my tongue because they were nearly 50 dollars! But we sucked it up and bought one. She used it for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. So in the long run those cheapy ones were costing more. It could still look fine if I washed it again and sewed up a couple of places. But she'll be the new kid in a new school in a new town this year...starting HS. So I'll get her a new one.

I can see it being helpful if you aren't around to shop. However, based on sales from past years I should be able to get everything for DS for about $15...not counting his backpack. If a backpack is included for that amount I could see where it might be worth it.

I am thinking that the number/type of items on your "school supply list" is quite different from ours...

I'll try to dig up a list....

Yeah, that's something my parents never quite figured out either. I always had cheap backpacks in school and they ALWAYS ripped. There was one year where I went through 3 or 4 and finally wound up using some 50 year old medical bag that had been sitting in the basement for years (quite embarrassing). Then, my freshman year of college I got a simple Nike backpack w/ real stitching and a leather bottom that lasted me through 6 years of school, a couple camping trips, and about a year's worth of work as a roadie until it was finally stolen. They typically go for $40-60, but if you keep an eye out for sales and outlet stores, you oughta be able to get one for about half that. My wife just got a nice one a few weeks ago at the outlet mall for ~$25. There's no reason you have to get one during "back to school" time.

-Dan.

Here's my 4th grade son's list:

3 packs of wide-ruled notebook paper
2 boxes of tissues
2 rolls of paper towels
Art Shirt (I did not count this in the cost because I will just give him one of my old shirts)
NIV Bible
Book Bag

5 Jumbo fabric book covers

Pencil box
Scissors
no 2 pencils
colored pencils
composition book

My daughter last year in 8th grade needed a few other things but it was still only about $30 including a zip up fabric covered binder, 3X5 cards, accordion folder, red pens.

That's true of quite a lot of things!

School here starts August 2nd, so back to school shopping is in full swing for everyone.

Zoebob, I agree with you - I think I spent less than $20 per kids, and that included art boxes, etc..... Also, thanks so much for the Staples ad. We don't get the Sunday paper anymore, so I don't get the ad inserts. I should probably get them e-mailed to me. I work right next door to Staples, so I will be there alot.

Does anybody have good suggestions for lunch boxes? My kids' backpacks held up this year, but there lunch boxes alwyas rip on the inside.

Thanks for the tip!! We have a Staples here in town

I have seen school supplies in our local Wal-Mart. My thought was, "Isn't it a bit early?" Then later I realized that the students start school in one month, so it isn't really that early. I think our first day is August 12th.
